TIDES OF CHANGE.

“Change is the only permanent thing” this is a cliche we are all familiar with but guess what? Change is one of the realities people resist most.

Inspite of the fact that change can bring progress, trigger new perspectives, innovation, new discoveries alongside new opportunities a lot of people do not even want to consider it. Whenever we embrace change it becomes easier to navigate.

It is important to note that not all changes are positive but all must be adjusted to properly which ensures transition from that point to another.

Ranking highest in reasons for resisting change are the following:

  • Fear of the unknown- This fear is very valid but it must be conquered to enable progress.
  • Suspicion of motives- If the source of change is mistrusted then that change initiative will be resisted.
  • Rigidity- Some people are so entrenched in their ways that they never want to consider any other options. This is a serious indicator they need change.
  • Negative prior experiences of change- This usually leads to low expectations and motivation to embrace change.
  • Poor communication- How it is said is usually more important than what is being said most times.

There are 3 categories of reactions to change as disclosed by a study

  • Be non active
  • Be reactive
  • Be proactive and positive

All these three reactions have their consequences. The best is to be proactive and positive which will include;

  • Embrace change-Even if you do not consider it as positive. You must understand it, and then you can deal with it. Identify the risk it posses or your fears, try to mitigate the risks and when you cannot manage the risks it helps you deal with your fears.
  • Accept your emotions- Do not deny them. If you feel sad express it but do not allow your emotions drown you, overcome them.
  • Be positive- Always look out for the good. Look out for opportunities in spite of how it seems.
  • In any condition of change you need to take action. Understand the situation, get your facts together and take decisions towards your desired outcome.
